This morning my 10 month old lady and I shared breakfast together. For this reason I love my Wednesday mornings; a very special moment between baby and I.
Did you know that oats are a fantastic food? It is high in fibre and I mean high averaging around 9g per 100g of oats. Oats are not low in fat, but provide a healthy dose of the desirable poly and mono-unsaturated fats. Cereals also contain phytoestrogens of the lignan family and several phenolic acids with antioxidant properties. Human studies have also shown that oat fibre reduces total and LDL cholesterol making porridge prepared with oats a perfect breakfast option. What’s more, the poly fats, selenium, folate, vitamin E and fibre in oats can all play a positive role in reducing our risk of heart disease. So let’s eat up!
INGREDIENTS
1/4 apple diced (peel if desired)
1- 2 heaped tablespoons rolled oats
60ml breastmilk or formula
Pinch of ground cinnamon
INSTRUCTIONS
Bring a small saucepan to medium heat, add the pieces of apple and cook with 1-2 tablespoons of water. Cover and once the apple pieces start to boil add the oats and milk of choice to cook further until soft. Serve with a pinch of cinnamon. Absolutely delicious!
